Progress through
Collaboration
Often land use and planning issues polarize communities. Diverse
interests have a significant stake in the outcome, and therefore
approach the process with caution and even mistrust. In the worst
case, the process can degrade into name-calling and hostility. But it
doesn't have to happen that way. We have seen fiercely divided
communities achieve an outcome that has the support of the diverse
interests-and establishes goodwill for further collaboration on future
issues. The three keys to success are: a well-designed framework that
defines the issues; creative tools for gathering the perspectives and
ideas of the interested parties and the public at large; and an open,
well-facilitated decision making process. Our process is based on an
"interest-based negotiating" (IBN) model, which we design with you
specifically to the needs and character of your community and its
issues under consideration. Your community will come away with not
only better planning decisions, but also stronger buy-in to the
decisions and a more positive sense of themselves.
