Take Charge of
Uncertainty
The environment around your organization
is changing rapidly. The future is uncertain-full of possibilities and
dangers. As a manager, you understand the need for planning. But, in
such tumultuous times, developing a long-term plan would be a futile
exercise.
Consider an alternative: scenario planning. It brings your management
team together, with participation from others, to consider the future
without "locking you in" to a rigid plan. Instead, you consider
several possible future scenarios, and think through the steps you
would take in addressing each. The process is dynamic and exciting,
and develops the management team by:
building their strategic thinking skills,
unifying the team by aligning their thinking about the future,
providing the greatest certainty possible in changing times-together
you have examined the possibilities and are prepared to address them.
You identify the strategies that would have the greatest benefit under
any of the different scenarios; those become top priority. You then
specify action steps to bring about the most desirable scenarios and
prevent those that are least desirable. Your organization no longer
waits to react to change, merely following the competition. Instead,
your team works in collaboration, boldly and proactively shaping its
future so that it charges ahead of the pack.
